Scotland have been”battered” from Ireland in their Rugby World Cup opener regardless of”spot-on” preparations, says full-back Stuart Hogg.
Gregor Townsend’s group delivered a display in Sunday’s 27-3 Pool A hammering in Yokohama.
The inaccurate Scots were overpowered with an Ireland side that pounced in their errors and scored four tries.
“I’ve never been engaged in a Scotland camp that the preparation was as spot-on,” Hogg, 27, told BBC Scotland.
“Unfortunately we’ve just not awakened and we have been battered.”
Scotland found themselves three attempts along with 16 points after just 25 minutes, together with James Ryan, Rory Best and Tadhg Furlong the penalty their only riposte of Greig Laidlaw, all crossing over. Much of the attacking success of Ireland stemmed from errors.
Andrew Conway killed the contest early in the second half after Ryan Wilson spilled Jack Carty and a ball clipped to finish a miserable afternoon for his men and Townsend.
The beat consigns Scotland to spot in Pool A, behind Russia on points difference. They handle Samoa next Monday, before concluding the group phase with a showdown with host nation Japan and facing the Russians.
“We talked a lot throughout the week about not beating ourselves and we coughed the ball up several times and gave away silly penalties,” additional Hogg, who won his first 70th cap on Sunday.
“We’re on the receiving end of five-metre maul line-outs and if Ireland get rumbling, they are very, very tricky to stop.
“We will learn and be better for this particular experience but at Test-match rugby you can’t afford to let chances slip and sadly that one’s only slipped beyond us.
“We’ve got the quality over the group to bounce back today. It is all about reviewing this in a positive light and ensuring we learn from our errors.”
In the very first of four World Cup warm-up matches, France dealt Scotland with a similar beating in Nice, delivering a performance at a 32-3 defeat.
Lock Grant Gilchrist confessed the revealing of Sunday bore hallmarks of the display.
“We proceeded on from dull and had three much better performances and thought we were in a far better place,” he explained.
“To get specific aspects of our sport that were similar was bitterly disappointing but we can also look at the way we reacted. We beat against France later then had two positive results [wins over Georgia].
“We have to do precisely the same as we did then. We now take our medicinewe look at the way we can get better and we all need to be for another three games.”
